Our Curriculum
At The Hub School we aim to offer all students a broad, balanced and rich experience which will equip them to succeed in a rapidly changing world. The school works to create conditions in which all students can grow and develop resilience, independence and creativity whilst developing into thoughtful, responsible and informed members of the local, national and international community.
We recognise that each student has their own strengths and talents and we aim to provide a personalised approach to learning wherever possible. We understand that some young people find aspects of mainstream education challenging and that some barriers to learning cannot be addressed without specialised support. We hope to provide the structure and support needed to allow each student to be successful and realise their full potential.
The Hub School aims to provide an alternative approach to mainstream education which caters for individual needs. Through a broad curriculum, highly skilled staff and child-centered values we provide a positive learning environment which promotes independence and achievement.
The Hub School will:
- support students using a variety of strategies in order to meet their individual needs which allows them to be successful, both now and in the future
- provide a platform for learning so that students can make academic progress which leads to success, achievement and positive progression
- give young people exciting opportunities and memorable experiences through a varied enrichment program which supports social and emotional well-being
KS3 Long Stay Provision
Students are encouraged to build their knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects at Key Stage 3 (KS3), which provide a platform to build towards qualification routes in Key Stage 4 (KS4). Timetabled lessons are supported by a varied enrichment programme, which provides students with an opportunity to pursue personal interests and gives an insight into Key Stage 4 qualifications, Post 16 pathways and careers.
Students have access to the wider national curriculum, but there is still a very strong emphasis on the development of social, emotional and behavioural skills, and literacy and numeracy skills. Literacy and numeracy are taught as discrete lessons and through project-based learning. 1-2-1 and small group intervention is put in place for students having difficulties with literacy and numeracy skills. Students also have access to lessons in PE, Design Technology, Food Technology, Art, Humanities, PSHE, Drama, Lifelong Learning and Science.
KS4 Long Stay Provision
At the end of KS4 students will leave The Hub School with the skills and knowledge to equip them for the most suitable Post 16 choices. Most importantly, they will have developed their personal and social skills to be able to cope appropriately with the many challenges of the ever changing world.
KS4 students have the opportunity to study a range of Functional Skills, GCSE and Level 1/2 qualifications. Alongside the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and PSHE, students are given the opportunity to study Art, Sport, Food Technology, Design Technology, Drama and Geography. Throughout KS4 students are given the opportunity to sit different qualifications at an appropriate level to ensure that each student leaves The Hub School equipped for their post 16 education pathway. In addition, some students have access to a range of nationally recognised vocational qualifications. These are delivered through local FE colleges and training providers.
At KS4, there is still a very strong emphasis on the development of social, emotional and behavioural skills. Students are able to access 1-2-1 and small group interventions for a range of Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) and academic support.
KS3 Short Stay Provision - Welton
For students receiving in-school intervention on a short-stay placement, the curriculum priorities are the development of social, emotional and behavioural skills. These skills are developed through project-based learning, small group and 1-2-1 intervention work. Literacy and numeracy are taught as discrete lessons and through project-based learning. Students also take part in outdoor education and a range of enrichment activities.
